ShotSpotter has cost Chicago tens of millions of dollars as a technology meant to aid the city’s police department against gun violence and Mayor Lori Lightfoot previously said the technology was “a lifesaver.” The inspector general’s office found that between January 1, 2020, and May 31 of this year, actual evidence of a gun-related crime was found in only about 4,500 instances, or 9 percent, of 50,000-plus ShotSpotter alerts....

The ruling comes as a number of states have announced plans to lift mask mandates in schools as COVID cases across the country have begun to recede. On Friday, Sangamon County Circuit Judge Raylene Grischow ruled that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker exceeded his authority by imposing mandates in schools and deemed the measures “null and void.” The governor has asked the attorney general’s office for an immediate appeal of the decision....

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday that Hill could return in Week 6 on Sunday, having missed Kansas City’s last four games with a shoulder problem. Reid added that Hill, who returned to practice last week, ran with the scout team and the offense this week. NFL Network reported earlier in the day that the Chiefs are “optimistic” the star receiver will be cleared to play the Texans....
